About Us
The Sickle in Me Foundation© ("SIMF") is a non-profit organization created solely for the purpose of spreading awareness about and facilitating constructive discussion about this chronic, lifelong illness. Founded in 2014 by Keshia Powell, a parent whose child suffers from Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), and Margaret Stewart, a Sickle Cell Champion who lost her battle with the (SS) form of SCD.
Our long-term and immediate mandate is to foster opportunities both in domestic (Canada) and international arenas for Education, Programming, and Activism as they relate to SCD outreach initiatives and social campaigns. Margaret S: Co-Founder & Sickle Cell Warrior, and true champion in her own right. Succumbed to the (SS) for of Sickle Cell Disease. Margaret loved all things in regards to children and wanted to create a platform for those whose voices go unheard, children adolescents and teens. She wanted everyone to know that Sickle Cell has no face and no one should be discriminated against in regards to SCD. Margaret and Keshia set off to create awareness and to spread education about sickle cell disease while helping those who suffer from it.
Keshia P: President & Co-Founder, Mom of 2, one is a Sickle Cell Warrior, She is the go-to lady for all things SIMF. Keshia and her best friend started the SIMF in 2014 and unfortunately lost her friend/co-founder to the disease. She has since made it her life mission to spread awareness, educate the community about Sickle Cell and help fight for a cure for her son and the rest of the Sickle Cell Warriors she has met on this journey.
Tanesha S: Secretary She is a mother of 4 and the sister of the late Margaret S. She has witnessed first hand what the disease can do to a loved one. Tanesha set out her own path to follow her sisters mission which is to engage dynamic community events while spreading awareness about her sisters battle and SCD.
